Redd Chilli Case Study: Landscape Garden

  Project Brief

To design and build a bespoke landscape garden with a contemporary look and feel, including the sourcing and installation of a shed, mood lighting, furnishing and a decorative water feature. The garden must be low maintenance and include a total of four user zones as follows:
  • Barbeque Area
  • Dining Area
  • Lounging Area
  • Shed
  • 2nd Seating area

  Date: May 2007
  Location: Southend On Sea, Essex
Budget: Cost including all materials, labour and furnishing £15,500:00
Time taken: 3 weeks from start to completion

    Stage 1

The grounds of this project were initially set on one level with a gradual slope ascending from the east to the west side. Clearance of all trees and shrubbery was required prior to any footage or foundations being laid.

    Stage 2

Upon clearance the slope was levelled off into two defined flat planes with the rear end of the garden (west side) being 500mm higher than the east side. This was separated by the foundations and block work installed for the water feature therefore creating a central focal point as well as creating two clear halves of the garden. At the rear end foundations and block work were also installed for use as a barbeque area located specifically to be directly between the dinning area and lounging area and shielded by the predominant westerly winds.

    Stage 3

Footings for the entire timber decking areas including walkway were installed. Block work was rendered to a smooth finish and painted with 2 coats of exterior paint to prior to laying down the decking grooved boards to allow full access and also to prevent back splash of paint.

  Stage 4

Pre-treated grooved decking boards were applied to the timber structure frame throughout, including the creation of a large feature planter and also a removable platform to allow easy access for mowing the lawn once installed.

You will see how the dinning area is located on the west side wall to be shielded by direct sunlight whereas the lounging area creates a south facing area to maximise the catch of sun light throughout the day. The two defined levels are joined by the decking walkway on a gradual slope. The two areas of soil are levelled out and prepared for installation of top soil and turf.

A further coat of exterior paint was applied to the rendered block work in the barbeque and water feature area. The client specifically asked for the pre-treated timber not to be stained as it comes complete with a 15 year guarantee. The timber will weather with age in time due to the elements and take on an attractive silvery grey character.

  Stage 5

Shed is assembled and treated on the lower level next to the planter. A lattice trellis is erected for privacy to the dinning area and the turf is laid in the dedicated areas. Burgundy slate shingle is used to fill the purpose built planter and barbeque area.

  Stage 6

Lighting is installed with all sockets housed in the installed shed for extra protection, including 4 post lights, blue low voltage LED's inset into the decking in the dinning area, green low voltage LED's inset into the decking in the lounging area and red LED lights into the stainless steel cascading water feature.

Furnishing was sourced and installed including a gas powered barbeque, table top chrome heater, rattan 6 seater contemporary outdoor sofa with coffee table , 2 x outdoor beanbag loungers, chrome decorative balls and two zinc plant pots with shrubs. The table and chairs were already present on location prior to the install.

  Client Comments

"When I originally started making enquiries for builders in essex for a decking installation I felt that those that I spoke to were single minded and set on providing a solution that was simply a timber structure with no real thought into the design and use that I could get out of it.

With exception to Redd Chilli, no one else was able to provide me with a one stop shop solution which met with the criteria and budget. From the initial plans and drawings to the completion of the project Redd Chilli kept me fully informed of their progress, and despite dropping behind on schedule due to poor weather conditions they made up the lost time by working extra hours at no additional cost.

Since completion of the installation I have received nothing but compliments for the install from friends and family. The service provided was courteous and efficient and the attention to detail unsurpassed. Redd Chilli have provided above and beyond the original brief and not only added value to my property but given me the perfect outdoor living space. Thank you Redd Chilli!"
