Redd Chilli Case Study: Interior Floor Tiling

  Project Brief

To install black slate tiles to a kitchen and dining room floor area within a second floor maisonette. The slate must have a deep black finish and be sealed to prevent any colour being transported from the tiles to the carpeted areas of the house.

  Date: July 2007
  Location: Westcliff On Sea, Essex
Budget: Cost including all materials, labour and finishing £950
Time taken: 2 days from start to completion

    Stage 1

The floors in this property were carpeted so all carpets and underlay had to be removed. Under the carpeting was an uneven floor covering of 5mm hardboard with parts missing so this also had to be removed.

The floorboards in this particular property were in poor condition and mostly loose. The next thing that had to be done was to make good the floorboards throughout the whole kitchen and dining room areas by taking out broken nails and re-securing the floorboards to the rafters taking care to avoid disturbing any underfloor pipework.

    Stage 2

Once the floorboards were secured, a thicker layer of plywood (10mm) was put down to absorb any slight movement from the aging floorboards.

  Stage 4

A plumb-line was stretched across the length of the two rooms to form a guide to tile to in order to create a centered line which would visually make the room appear longer. Flexible tile adhesive was applied onto the plywood layer to secure the floor tiles and the tiles were laid.

  Stage 5

Once the tile adhesive was dry the grouting could begin. Black grout was used to fill the gaps between the tiles and wall edges. Before the grout was dry the tiles were washed down thoroughly with clean sponges to remove any grout from the surface of the tiles and the skirting boards.

  Stage 6

The tiles were then sealed with a special slate formula, which also enhances the natural quality of a slate tile, and the project was complete.
